Idle Musings: A Greatsword Factoid

The classic “greatsword” of five to six feet long and 4-8 pounds in weight didn’t develop until the 1500s. Its three centers of use were in Germany (surprising absolutely no one), Spain (which, in fact, “did things” in the 1500s) and Italy (I.E. the heart of the Renaissance, something you’d think would’ve lent itself to civilized murder implements like the rapier and GUNS).

So remember: next time you’re playing an RPG and you see a barbarian with a greatsword, he really ought to be an Italian dandy.

Or a giant bearded German guy, but that wouldn’t be as deconstructive, would it?

Say something, darn it!
