The German phrase “Große Messer” translates literally to “big knife” and refers to this thing:

It was technically considered a knife because of the handle construction. German laws are… interesting. In spite of its rather Conan-ish aesthetic, it was most popular during the 1500s. Y’know, the Renaissance, that period of intense cultural development and a renewed emphasis on freedom of expression.

Meanwhile in Germany, eh?
